about

"It is a metaphysical truth that all nature would begin to lament if it were endowed with language."

"Speechlessness: that is the great sorrow of nature."

"...even where there is only a rustling of plants, in it there is always a lament."

"Because she is mute, nature mourns... the sadness of nature makes her mute."

"The language of nature is comparable to a secret password that each sentry passes to the next in his own language, but the meaning of the password is the sentry's language itself."

-Walter Benjamin
"On Language as Such and on the Language of Man"

lyrics

"Sonnet for the Sentries"

This sign-post glares: to gather,
awarding each tongue
with the secret of sentries
as nature slowly swings,

rewarding the risk
of this waking hypnosis,
caught in the branches
of her speechless breath,

just like that of a widow,
just recently named;
will you each stand guard and speak?

Lamenting in wordless whispers…
Each overlapping word’s coarse image,
its universal edges, cause you to cry out!
